Ethylene can reduce Prays oleae attack in olive trees
نویسندگان
چکیده
An ethrel treatment of olive trees in two sites differing in altitude caused a decline in the infestation of Prays oleae, an important pest in this crop. Since the ethylene treatment did not affect natural enemies of P. oleae, we conclude that this natural compound can be used as an alternative to the use of pesticides in olive orchards. The results of this work indicate that ethrel affects P. oleae attack not by increasing ethylene synthesis, but that other more complex defence mechanisms are involved in such a process. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Long-term study on the evaluation of yield and economic losses caused by Prays oleae Bern. in the olive crop of Granada (southern Spain)
A 28-year study (1970-1997) of olive trees grown in Granada (southern Spain) has revealed the levels of attack by the olive moth (Prays oleae Bern.), as well as the beneficial action of oophagous predators (Chrysopidae). On the basis of the results, the damage caused by the moth has been divided into three categories, and the yield and economic losses have been evaluated. When the final attack ...

Olive fly (Bactrocera oleae R.) is the most harmful insect pest of olive (Olea europaea L.) which strongly affects fruits and oil production. Despite the expanding economic importance of olive cultivation, up to now, only limited information on plant responses to B. oleae is available. Here, we demonstrate that olive fruits respond to B. oleae attack by producing changes in an array of differen...
متن کاملEffect of non-crop vegetation types on conservation biological control of pests in olive groves
Conservation biological control (CBC) is an environmentally sound potential alternative to the use of chemical insecticides. It involves modifications of the environment to promote natural enemy activity on pests. Despite many CBC studies increasing abundance of natural enemies, there are far fewer demonstrations of reduced pest density and very little work has been conducted in olive crops. In...

Helicotylenchus oleae n. sp. and H. neopaxilli n. sp., from olive roots and soil in Italy, are described and illustrated. Helicotylenchus oleae can be distinguished from the related species H. canadensis and H. tunisiensis especially by the smaller styler, its distinctive tail shape, and a tail longer than one anal body width. Helicotylenchus neopaxilli differs from the close species H. paxilli...
متن کاملEffects of olive scale (Parlatoria oleae (Colvée)) attack on yield, quality and fatty acid profile of virgin olive oil
Olive scale (Parlatoria oleae (Colvée)) is a common pest in Mediterranean olive orchards which primarily causes damage on olive fruits. The quality of virgin olive oil is strongly related to the health status of the olive fruits from which is extracted. In this paper the effects of olive scale (Parlatoria oleae (Colvée)) attack on the oil yield, chemical and sensorial quality, as well as on the...
